The press regulator Ofcom will be gaining more power in controlling social media sites. Firms that could be under threat include Facebook, Twitter and TikTok who were previously self-regulated.

The changes that are to be instated are currently uncertain, but that hasn’t stopped the topic from dividing Falmouth’s opinion.

Ofcom already regulate television and radio broadcasters. The new rules will apply to firms that host user-generated content.

Ofcom hope they’ll be able to tackle these online threats without the need for further legislation.
