Penryn’s 22-25 loss to Saltash on Saturday has left a big dent in their hopes for promotion from their division, and ended their 8 game winning streak in the league.

The hosts were dominant in the first half and went into the break 10-3 up, with Adam Hughes scoring the only try of the half, before being forced off with a shoulder injury.

However, the home side came undone early into the second half, when two yellow cards in the space of two minutes left them facing a dangerous Saltash attack with only thirteen men on the field.

“It’s in the laps of the gods now. All we can control is what we can control and that means getting 10 points from the last two games, and we’ve just got to hope they slip up somewhere along the line.”

Penryn manager Ian Morgan said: “Ultimately two yellow cards, dropped us to 13 men and they scored 13 unanswered points. It is what it is; you’ve got to take it on the chin.”

“In fairness the only time they looked dangerous was when we went down to thirteen men, and even then we still managed to finish really strongly then.”

Borough attempted a late comeback, and brought the game to within three points. But the 15 point deficit proved to great, and the referee called an end to the game before they could catch the visitors.

“I knew it would be a close ending. I asked the ref how long we had from the kick off after the first try and he told me two minutes.”

Morgan knew a loss today meant that their hopes of promotion would then be reliant on other results going their way. He said: “It’s in the lap of the gods now. All we can control is what we can control and that means getting 10 points from the last two games, and we’ve just got to hope they slip up somewhere along the line.”

Penryn and Saltash congratulate each other at the end of a hard fought match.
