Have you ever been slated by your lecturer for expressing your political view? Or has your political view been widely appreciated by your lecturers?

A report by Adam Smith Institute has been released claiming that 74% of UK universities have lecturers that are either left wing or liberal and therefore the lack of right wing academics on campus is a threat to free speech.

It claims that UK universities that do not have political diversity among their staff, are more likely to create a ‘dangerous’ social setting for ‘group-thinking mentality’. Group thinking mentality is “a dysfunctional atmosphere where key assumptions go unquestioned, dissenting opinions are neutralized, and favoured beliefs are held as sacrosanct,” the report reads.

The report also highlights that there is a correlation between lecturers who teach a particular subject and how that influences what their personal political view is.

It reads: “The left-liberal overrepresentation varies across subject areas. Lectures supporting the Conservatives who taught business and law [for example] were higher in percentage compared to lecturers in the social sciences, and was lowest of all at less than 5% in the humanities and arts.”

Truthfal takes a look at what students at Falmouth University think.

Although the rest of the universities across the country may be subject to this report’s claims, here at Falmouth University, we are certainly just alright.
