It has been reported that 2.1 million people have visited Accident and Emergency units with assault related injuries since 2013. The key debate underpinning this issue is whether leniency should be granted to offenders in light of the role intoxicants had to play in their motivation. Or should they face the same consequences as anyone who commits murder, and be punished accordingly?
