When a student enrolls in university there is an endless list of questions that goes through their minds. How will they maintain getting good grades, balancing new friendships and surviving without their parents?

But the biggest question of all, is how will they have enough money to support themselves?

Part time jobs are hard to find in Falmouth with the rising number of students in the town. There are many who are now turning their backs on traditional jobs like cleaning and bar work and finding weird and wacky alternatives. Some of these students even use their degrees to think outside the box.

Kayleigh George, 23, is a third year animation student at Falmouth University. She funded her second year of university by drawing ‘furry porn’.

Furry porn is described on Urban Dictionary as “still images or motion pictures involving animals engaging in some kind of sexual act, whether it be with another animal or a human being. The animal, though, does not have to be furry in most cases.”

She started as a supervisor in a waffle house and enjoyed her job, but the family run business was not making enough money so they had to let her go.

“People shouldn’t close themselves off from unusual ideas – they can be fun and it’s all experience”

She said: “At the end of the day, we all have to make ends meet. People shouldn’t do anything that’s dangerous or something they’ll regret, but they shouldn’t close themselves off from unusual ideas – they can be fun and it’s all experience.

“A lot of people don’t like ‘furries’ because they’re put off by how unusual their interests are, but it takes all sorts to make a world.

“I don’t do it anymore because I have a job, between a job and my final year at university, I barely have time to draw for myself. I was never made to draw something I wasn’t okay with.”

Another student from Falmouth University who has asked to stay anonymous makes money as a Cam Girl. A cam girl is someone who is in the sex industry where people pay online to see explicit photographs and videos. They also live video chat with the person who is paying.

She started working in the industry in her second year so that she could have disposable cash as her student loan was being used up for food and heating.

She said: “My only income was my student loan which doesn’t leave you with much money to just spend on yourself. It also started as an excuse to buy cute underwear.

“I have enough money now to go out on day trips with my friends, I can afford a train ticket or petrol money to places like Newquay and The Lizard which honestly helps me so much with my work.

“I don’t think I would do any other jobs in the sex industry, although I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t considered and looked into things like stripping. Weirdly, I don’t actually like sex that much so anything that involves physical contact wouldn’t be a job I’d go for. But I wouldn’t rule anything out completely, because I know how much they pay.”

Being a cam girl has helped her with her body confidence and is the first ‘job’ she has ever had.

“I wish there wasn’t such a stigma around sex workers. In the end, it is just a job for us.”
